Lavender… The Quiet Classic
Why we love it, how we use it, and why not all lavender is quite the same
Lavender has long been one of those beautifully classic scents: soft freshly laundered sheets, sunny gardens, little fabric sachets tucked into drawers, or the gentle pause of a warm evening bath.
At Thula & Bloom, we love lavender not because it promises to solve everything, but because it creates a feeling. It is a scent that encourages you to slow down, breathe a little more deeply and take a pause.
It also feels personal to me. Lavender was my gran’s favourite flower, and using it across our products feels like a quiet way of paying homage to her and carrying that love forward.
“Lavender” is often used as a catch-all term, but there are many varieties, each with its own scent, appearance and best use.
Folgate Lavender
Folgate is a variety of English lavender rather than a completely separate type of plant. It has that recognisable classic lavender fragrance: floral, rounded, calming and not too harsh.
At Thula & Bloom, we particularly love Folgate lavender, a beautiful English lavender variety grown here in Kent and known for its rich scent and deep purple flowers, which is especially lovely for drying.
This is the lavender we choose for products where we want a softer, more cocooning experience, such as our lavender magnesium butter and our dried lavender sachets and milky spa bath salts.
Lavandin: Lavandula × intermedia
Lavandin is a natural hybrid of English lavender and spike lavender. It tends to be taller, more robust and more strongly scented than English lavender.
Its fragrance is bolder, fresher and slightly more herbal, with a naturally camphoraceous edge. It is often the lavender people notice most strongly when they walk through a lavender field or light a lavender candle.
For Thula & Bloom, lavandin works beautifully in candles and home fragrance, where we want the scent to fill a room and linger a little longer. It has that unmistakable clean-linen, countryside-lavender feeling that makes a home feel calm and cared for.
Neither is “better” than the other; they simply create different experiences.
How we use lavender at Thula & Bloom
We use lavender in several ways across our collection, always choosing the type that best suits the product and the ritual it is intended to create.
In our magnesium butter, we use lavender to bring a soft, comforting aroma to an evening wind-down routine.
In our candles, we use lavender and lavandin blends to create a fuller fragrance that gently carries through a room.
In our bath salts and milk soaks, lavender adds a spa-like touch, helping turn an everyday bath into a proper moment of rest.
In our dried lavender bunches and sachets, the scent is simple, natural and timeless. Tuck them into drawers, place them beside your bed, hang them in a wardrobe, or give them as a small thoughtful gift.
Lavender as a small ritual
For us, lavender is classic, and beautiful. It shows up in the little things: lighting a candle after a long day, soaking tired feet, applying a little body butter before bed, or opening a drawer and catching that familiar floral scent.
These are small moments, but they matter.
We choose lavender because it brings together nature, nostalgia and comfort in the most uncomplicated way. It reminds us that rest does not have to be grand or expensive. It can be as simple as a warm bath, a soft scent and a few minutes that belong only to you.
